The Church of Transfiguration of Jesus upon a mountain is situated high on Rogla. At around 1500 meters above sea level, it is the second highest-situated church in Slovenia (after the Church of St. Ursula on Uršlja gora).

Wedding in a different church

With its unusual, hill-like appearance, it is often the target of tourists' gazes, and even more often the place where couples promise eternal vows. Rogla is a common choice for a wedding celebration. As the basis for the design of the exterior shape of the church, the architect used the form of a conical spruce, the most common tree in Pohorje.

The realization of an idea which was years old

With the erection of the church on Rogla, the locals not only realized the decades-old idea about a church in this popular ski resort and hiking spot, but have become one of the few examples of the economy investing in sacral objects. The church was built in 2010 according to the plans of the architect Vera Klepej Turnšek

3 interesting facts:

  • The stone gifting altar, tabernacle and baptiser are forged, thus adding a touch of home-made craft to the church. Blacksmithery has had a long tradition in Zreče for centuries. The forgery was made by the local artist, a blacksmith Milan Očko from Zreče.
  • There are 1816 flutes in the breath-taking church organ. The metal whistles are made of tin and lead alloy, the wooden ones are made of spruce, pine, maple, pear, plum, oak, ash, hornbeam and ebony. Since they were perfectly crafted, they are able to perform the most demanding organ compositions and concerts.
  • The Church of Transfiguration of Jesus has three bells. All three bells are thoughtfully dedicated to the life of the people from the Pohorje region. The first is dedicated to St. Peter, the patron saint of blacksmiths, the second to St. Roch, the patron saint of peasants and shephards and the third to St. Barbara, the patron saint of miners.
